The last line of The Pearl symbolizes how, as the pearl disappears from view, the hatred and pain that it has brought starts to drift away and Kino and Juana's life will renew and they will find a day when they can be happy again. The motif of the music is like foreshadowing. It represents the mood and the feelings of the story and it gives a distant representation of what is going to happen less. And as the pearl "dies" the music "dies" just as when the scorpion died and the evil music faded away. Kino's music always appears in a time that is significantly emotional. When he is elated, when he is angry, when he desperate, the music comes back and represents his feelings.
In Kino's society, the pearl is a symbol of luck. Even a small pearl in Kino's society is lucky. But in the total scheme of things the pearl isn't lucky. How could the pearl be lucky if it kills Coyotito and make Kino a killer? Overall, the pearl is a symbol of greed. It shows how money changes your head. In the beginning, Kino is nice and gentle and peacefull. After Kino has had the pearl for a while, his nature changes and he is greedy and wanting, almost as much as the doctor, only in a different way. Kino wants for his family, and the doctor wants for himself, but the main idea is still the same. Money changes people. The pearl has torn Kino's family apart. The pearl has caused the death of Coyotito, and it has made Juana view Kino as a different man. If that doesn't tear a family, what does?
